Fair Housing

Everyone is entitled to the same service, the same information and the same access to housing. This page explains what that means here and how to raise it if you think it has not happened.

The commitment

Tanner works with buyers, sellers, tenants and owners without regard to race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin — the classes the federal Fair Housing Act protects — and to the classes North Carolina’s State Fair Housing Act protects. Sexual orientation and gender identity are covered by federal enforcement policy under the Act’s sex provision.

That applies to which properties get shown, what information is given, how an offer is handled, and how somebody is spoken to.

What that means on this website

Fair housing is not only about how people are treated in person. It reaches how an area is described in writing, so the pages on this site are written about the property and the place rather than about who lives there.

  • The area pages describe flood exposure, elevation, access, rules, taxes and what a street is physically like — not the character of the people in it.
  • No page rates a school, a neighborhood or a community as good, safe, family-friendly or desirable. Those words carry meanings that steer people, whatever was meant by them.
  • The property search offers what the MLS feed offers. It is not filtered by anything about a buyer.
  • Where a page links to demographic or school information, it links to the authority that publishes it rather than summarizing it here.

Accessibility and reasonable accommodation

If you need information in a different format, need a different way of viewing a property, or need any other adjustment in order to take part, ask. It will be arranged where it can be. Whether a particular change to a property is required is a decision for the owner or the association, but nothing needs to wait on that before asking.

If you think you have been treated unfairly

Raise it with Tanner and with his broker-in-charge, whose brokerage is named in the footer of every page. You can also go straight to the agencies, and you do not need anybody’s permission to do so:

  • The North Carolina Human Relations Commission, which enforces the State Fair Housing Act: 1711 New Hope Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27609; telephone 984-236-1850; housing complaints by email to hrc.complaints@oah.nc.gov; complaint form at oah.nc.gov/civil-rights-division/housing-discrimination.
  • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which enforces the federal Fair Housing Act: telephone 1-800-669-9777; report online at hud.gov/reporthousingdiscrimination.
  • The North Carolina Real Estate Commission, for the conduct of a licensed broker: 1313 Navaho Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609; mailing address P.O. Box 17100, Raleigh, NC 27619; telephone 919-875-3700; complaints are made in writing on the form at ncrec.gov/complaintform.

These details were taken from each agency’s own website on 2 October 2026. Agencies move and change their numbers; if one of these no longer works, the agency’s own page is the authority.
