This site is built to be usable by keyboard, by screen reader, at large text sizes and on a small screen. This page says what that means in practice, and what is known not to work yet.
What the site aims for
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. That is the standard the site is built and checked against; it is a target being worked towards rather than a certification anybody has issued.
What is in place
- Every control can be reached and operated by keyboard, and the thing with focus is always visibly outlined.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, which is larger than the guidelines require.
- Headings run in order and each page has exactly one first-level heading, so a screen reader can be used to navigate rather than only to read.
- A skip link goes straight to the main content.
- Text meets the contrast the guidelines set, and so do the outlines and underlines around form fields.
- Nothing moves, plays or changes by itself, and no video starts on its own.
- Where an animation exists, it is switched off for anyone whose device asks for reduced motion.
- The layout holds together at 400% zoom and on a small phone without sideways scrolling.
- Meaningful images carry a description; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers rather than described pointlessly.
- Forms label every field, and errors say what is wrong in words.
What is known not to work yet
The property search, its results and the listing pages come from the MLS plugin. Its markup is not written here and cannot be rewritten without breaking the licensed feed. Its accessibility has not been separately audited, and some of it is known not to match the rest of the site. Styling reaches parts of it; structure does not.
Videos play through YouTube’s own player once started, and captions depend on what each video carries.
Where a document links out to a town or state website, that site is outside this one’s control.
If something does not work for you
Tell Tanner and it will be looked at. If a page is in the way of something you were trying to do, say what you were trying to do — he can give you the information directly while the page is being fixed.
